Semax is a synthetic heptapeptide derived from the ACTH(4-7) sequence. Originally developed in Russia for stroke and cognitive impairment research, it is one of the most studied neuroprotective peptides.
Key Research Areas
- Neuroprotective effects in ischaemia and traumatic brain injury models
- Increases BDNF and NGF (Nerve Growth Factor) expression
- Studied for cognitive enhancement, focus and memory in animal models
- Modulates dopaminergic and serotonergic neurotransmission
- Anti-inflammatory effects in CNS injury research
Mechanism of Action
Semax activates melanocortin receptors and upregulates BDNF synthesis in the hippocampus. It also modulates the expression of genes involved in neuroplasticity, synaptic transmission and neuroprotection.
